Even before the acknowledgement of what do the acidity issues represent to plants, Greeks and Romans already applied a mixture of friable limestone with clay in their cropping areas in order to improve the productivity.
In Europe, since XVIII century, limestone application became a regular step on crops in order to improve soil properties. In Brazil, only a little over 40 years ago, we began to realize, shyly, the beneficial effects of this amendment application. Today, the optimal liming is a decisive factor for the success of agriculture of our country.
Crop with the correct liming is synonym of high productivity.
Soy. The main open field culture in Brazil (approximately 18.5 million of hectares). It is responsible for the constant enlargement of our agricultural frontier. It is very adaptable to low fertility soils, where a well done liming is essential since the beginning.
Corn, rice and wheat. Oats cropped in Brazil are responsible for consuming more than half of fertilizers used. They have different behaviors related to soil acidity. Rice, usually, is tolerable to low levels of pH. The varieties of wheat and corn are adaptable according to acidity ranges and soil types of each region. Liming is the most important practice which allows the maximum productivity for all kind of grassland cropped in the country.
Coffee. A product that, most of the time, suffer with lack of liming. The excess of nitrogen fertilizers used on this crop, usually, leads the soils to highly acidification. Additionally, the imbalanced of nutrients caused by the accumulation of potassium in soil and a lack of phosphorous application, at the exactly time that the plant needs, damage the crop.
Sugarcane. This kind of crop is very rigorous with respect to nutrients. In this case, liming has become an ordinary practice aiming to produce better. Although the sugarcane is relatively tolerable to low pH soil, the rootstock acidity control through liming is fundamental to calcium and magnesium replacement, besides to be a more economic investment (considering that one application is valid for more than one harvest).
Potato. Liming is very important for this crop, once increases the productivity and the tubercle sizes.
Bean. It is one of the most important brazilian's foods. In most part of the country, beans are
cropped by small producers. Bean is open field crop that is better produced in amended soil.
Orange. One of the most important crops of our country in which liming is very important, since the establishment of the orchard. In case of an already established orchards, limestone must be regularly incorporated in scales. A good liming is reflected on the harvest, with big and healthy fruits.
Fruits and greenstuffs. Are also benefitted by the correct liming, once become less exposed to diseases, producing much more in high quality.
Pasture. Although tolerable to some acidity degree, pastures have a better development under an amended soil. Limestone helps on damaged pasture to become new, or with low magnesium level. If limestone is incorporated in higher quantities for pasture formation, it has a residual effect for many years.
Nowadays, the successful people that work on agricultural know that caring a lot about the land means to have a good recompense from it. This is not only very romantic, but it is also very profitable.
